Government appoints team of experts to aid war against narcotics

Murkomen said the initiative aligns with the government's commitment to addressing the growing drug abuse crisis, particularly among the youth.

To enhance the fight against drug abuse, the government has appointed a team of experts as cases of narcotic use continue to rise in the country.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced on Friday, via a gazette notice, the appointment of 18 professionals who will play a key role in analysing and ensuring the safe disposal of illicit substances.

Their designation was gazetted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.

The appointed analysts include Jane Nafula Kisutia, Dorcus Nzilani Muthusi, Jackson Siele, Paul Bwora Wahoye, Jerusha Waithera Mugo, Salvine Cheruto Katukoi, Godwin Khamala Waliama, David Kiara Muthomi, Mercy Nkarye Runya, and Catherine Mbete Nzuve.

Others on the list are Hemed Abeid Munis, Khadija Abdullahi Boya, Alexander Mbae Mburia, Luge Victoria Kiugha, Beth Purity Makena Gitonga, Christine Naserian Kudate, Felista Kairithi Henry, and Crispin Njeru Nguru.

According to the law, the analysts will be responsible for examining seized substances, conducting tests to determine their nature, and documenting their findings in reports that will serve as evidence in legal cases.

They will also provide expert testimony in court and oversee the proper handling, storage, and disposal of narcotics.

The team will work closely with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), the Interior Ministry, and law enforcement agencies to strengthen efforts in combating drug abuse.

Murkomen said the initiative aligns with the government's commitment to addressing the growing drug abuse crisis, particularly among the youth.

“Alcohol and drug abuse among our youth ruin their health, hurt their potential, threaten our national security, and undermine our development. This crisis needs an urgent national conversation about finding an all-of-society approach to combat it," he stated during the launch of a NACADA report highlighting the rising cases of substance abuse in universities.
